Position Summary

The EP-Cardiology Nurse provides skilled nursing care to patients undergoing cardiac electrophysiology procedures and long-term rhythm management under the direction of a Cardiologist specializing in electrophysiology. This includes assisting with EP studies, device implants (pacemakers, ICDs, loop recorders), ablation procedures, and follow-up device interrogation and monitoring. The nurse supports patient care from pre-procedure to post-procedure recovery and contributes to the diagnosis and treatment planning of arrhythmia-related conditions. Responsibilities include patient education, monitoring during invasive/non-invasive procedures, and participating in the optimization of arrhythmia care protocols in collaboration with physicians, NPs/PAs, and other staff.

  • Supports the Cardiology department’s mission through collaboration, patient education, and proactive care management.
  • Adheres to safety standards in procedural environments including cath labs, EP labs, and telemetry units.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Develops and implements care plans for EP patients, including those receiving pacemakers, defibrillators, and undergoing catheter ablation.
  • Educates patients and families on arrhythmias, procedural expectations, and device use (e.g., home monitoring systems, wound care).
  • Prepares patients for diagnostic and therapeutic EP procedures; assists during procedures as needed.
  • Observes and monitors patients pre-, intra-, and post-procedure for signs of complications (e.g., arrhythmia recurrence, bleeding, infection).
  • Collaborates with cardiologists, device reps, and clinical staff to optimize care pathways and manage device interrogations.
  • Interfaces with vendors and EP lab techs for device support and remote monitoring management.
  • Participates in quality improvement initiatives related to arrhythmia care and EP procedure outcomes.
  • Maintains accurate and timely EMR documentation, including rhythm assessments and procedural notes.
  • Responds to cardiac rhythm alerts, telemetry reports, and device flags to triage care appropriately.
  • Restocks EP-specific supplies and maintains procedural area readiness.

Qualifications

Education & Certifications

  • Licensed Registered Nurse in the State of North Carolina.
  • BLS and ACLS certification required.
  • Certification in Cardiac Device Therapy or EP Nursing preferred (e.g., IBHRE certification).

Experience

  • Required: Minimum 2 years of clinical nursing experience.
  • Preferred: 1–2 years of experience in cardiology or electrophysiology.
  • Experience with cardiac telemetry, EP lab procedures, and pacemaker/ICD follow-up a strong plus.
  • Familiarity with EMR systems and cardiac device platforms (e.g., Medtronic, Boston Scientific, Abbott).

Skills and Abilities

  • Proficiency in ECG interpretation and recognition of rhythm disturbances.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills for patient education and multidisciplinary coordination.
  • Analytical skills to assess telemetry data and device reports.
  • Ability to manage urgent or emergent cardiac situations with calm and accuracy.
  • Organizational skills to manage patient follow-up, device monitoring logs, and clinic scheduling.
  • Basic to advanced computer skills; experience with remote cardiac monitoring software preferred.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

Frequent standing, walking, and manual dexterity required in procedural areas.
Exposure to bloodborne pathogens, radiation (with protection), and clinical equipment.
Moderate noise levels typical of cardiology and procedural settings.
