Job Description

The Mission of the Funeral Director/Embalmer is to increase the funeral home net revenue every year—combination of increasing call volumes and ARPC of the funeral home.

The Funeral Director will arrange, oversee, direct, and coordinate all aspects of funeral services including body preparation, visitation, services, burials, and cremations, while providing caring support and advice to families and friends of the deceased.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Ability to manage a caseload while creating an exceptional customer experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to interact with families during time of need and create and maintain a premier level of client family satisfaction.
  • Skillfully discusses options and preference for disposition of the remains; addresses and explains the costs of the funeral and collects payment with family and/or legal representatives of the deceased.
  • Plans and coordinates arrangements for the funeral, including the ordering of merchandise as needed.
  • Ensures the transfer of the body or remains to the funeral home.
  • May be required to participate in the embalming process.
  • Coordinates service details with clergy, pallbearers, and other service participants.
  • Makes arrangements with cemeteries for scheduling, opening and closing of gravesite and use of facilities, as necessary.
  • Oversees the issuance of death notices, obituaries, and related paperwork to government agencies and preferred newspapers or other appropriate media.
  • Ensures all required documents are completed, and recorded in a timely and orderly manner, consulting with family to obtain accurate and necessary information for completion.
  • Coordinates their work with all members of the funeral home team.
  • Abide by all federal, state and local regulations related funerals or cremations.
  • Practice and strictly enforce all logging, identification, casketing and cremation processes of the home.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES

  • Ability to manage distressing and stressful situations with sensitivity and care.
  • Professional communication skills.
  • Excellent written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Thorough understanding of methods for comforting people during grief.
  • Thorough understanding of laws related to funerals and funeral arrangements.
  • Ability to promptly and accurately execute required legal paperwork.
  • Ability to perform mortuary services.
  • Detail-oriented and extremely organized.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
  • Proficient or willing to become proficient in Crakn.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Associate’s Degree in Mortuary Science.
  • 1+ years’ of industry experience.
  • Current license or certification required by state regulations to make funeral arrangements or direct funerals.
  • Knowledge of current federal, state and local regulations related to the funeral industry.
  • Valid driver’s license and good driving record.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds and pushing/pulling up to 100 pounds.
  • A funeral director spends a significant portion of time within a funeral home, meeting with families and making funeral arrangements.
  • Funeral directors are also present at wakes and memorial services sponsored by the home, and may travel with the family to church and then to the cemetery and grave site following funeral services.
  • Funeral directors general work 40-hour weeks, though hours may vary depending on the needs of the family, and weekend, evening, and holiday hours are common.
  • Hazards associated with trade: possible exposure to communicable disease, blood borne pathogens, formaldehyde, and high temperature work environment in crematory.
