Position: Police Officer - Out-of-State Lateral
Salary Range: $43.53 - $49.44 Hourly
Position Summary
The Salem Police Department is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Police Officer - Out-of-State Lateral. This position is open to individuals who are currently or have recently (within 12 months) served as Police Officers outside of Oregon, with a minimum of three years of full-time law enforcement experience.
The department offers opportunities to work in specialized units such as SWAT, Bomb Squad, Crisis Negotiations, Strategic Investigations, Computer Forensics, Behavioral Health, and more. State-of-the-art equipment and technology are provided, including patrol vehicles equipped with advanced computer systems, automated license plate readers, and body cameras.
Compensation and Benefits
Hourly Rate: $43.53 - $49.44 (based on experience)
Incentives:
Certification, training, and college incentives (2%-10%)
Extra duty or specialized assignments (2.5%-5%)

The City may provide up to 80 hours of vacation and 40 hours of sick leave upon hire, depending on the candidate's experience.
Responsibilities
Patrol assigned areas to enforce laws and ordinances
Respond to citizen complaints and investigate reports of crimes or accidents
Examine crime scenes and preserve evidence
Engage with the public through community meetings and educational outreach
Prepare reports and collaborate with specialized units when necessary
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED
Current or recent (within the past 12 months) employment as a police officer with at least three years of full-time experience
Basic Police Certification or equivalent from another state (Oregon certification is not required initially)
Valid driver's license with a clean driving record
U.S. citizen or eligible to become one within 18 months of hire
Minimum age of 21 at the time of hire
Selection Process
Applicants meeting the qualifications will proceed through the following stages:
Submission of a complete application, including a resume
Extensive background investigation
Conditional offer followed by:
Medical and psychological evaluations
Drug testing (including marijuana)
Final hiring decision
Candidates not selected may be placed on an eligibility list for up to six months for future hiring opportunities.
