The Wisconsin Traffic Operations and Safety (TOPS) Laboratory, part of the College of Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, is a nationally recognized research organization with a mission to improve traffic operations and safety through a diverse balance of research, partnerships, service, and training. The TOPS Lab research program considers all aspects of transportation safety and operations, including the integration of field and laboratory experimentation, statistical modeling, human factors, information systems and technology, and design and operational effects. The TOPS Lab manages several large-scale transportation research and data management systems and works closely with the UW Division of Information Technology (DoIT), the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT), and other partners to support the computing infrastructure for these systems.
Job Description: As an IT System Engineer at the TOPS Lab, you will play a crucial role in maintaining and enhancing our IT infrastructure. Your responsibilities will include ensuring the security and efficiency of our systems, automating processes, and supporting various IT functions of large-scale computing systems supporting 24/7 operational and research data requirements. Highly desirable skills and qualifications:
- One or more years of professional experience in systems administration or a related information technology support role
- Experience with firewalls and basic understanding cybersecurity principles and best practices
- Experience working with enterprise networks
- Experience supporting physical and virtual server environments
- Experience with automation tools and scripting languages.
- Experience setting up and supporting enterprise databases
- Backup systems and techniques
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Strong communication and teamwork abilities.
