With over 15 years of R&D, LiquidPiston’s technology is built to meet the next-generation power demands across multiple sectors. We are currently focused on military and aerospace applications, where compact power density is critical. Future applications include industrial, commercial, marine, UAVs, urban air mobility, and even automotive markets. Our technology enables new capabilities in electrified platforms, portable power, and unmanned systems—supporting emerging trends in sustainable, flexible mobility and power.
As Vice President of Engineering , you will be a key member of the executive leadership team, reporting directly to the CEO. This role is central to LiquidPiston’s transition from deep R&D to product development and commercialization.
You’ll lead a passionate, high-performing team through this next phase of company growth, expected to scale from ~20 engineers to 40+ in the near term. Your mission: drive engineering excellence, deliver breakthrough engine and generator systems, and help define LiquidPiston’s future product lines.
This position requires a balance of technical depth, leadership acumen, and strategic vision. You’ll provide direction across mechanical, electrical, systems, and software engineering while ensuring rapid iteration, quality execution, and cross-functional alignment.
Lead and grow a multidisciplinary engineering team across mechanical, electrical, software, systems, and testing disciplines.
Oversee design, development, prototyping, testing, and validation of advanced rotary engines and generator systems.
Provide hands-on technical guidance in areas such as engine architecture, calibration, system integration, and controls.
Ensure timely delivery of project milestones, from early concepts to production-ready prototypes.
Define engineering standards, development processes, documentation, and quality systems.
Collaborate closely with the CEO, CTO, and business development team to align engineering efforts with market opportunities and customer needs.
Support and co-author technical proposals and whitepapers for government and commercial funding opportunities.
Represent the company in meetings with strategic partners, customers, and government agencies (e.g., DARPA, DOE).
Manage external resources including contractors, vendors, and joint development partners.
Help build a culture of accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement.
B.S. in Mechanical Engineering required; M.S. or Ph.D. preferred.
15+ years of experience in engineering leadership roles, ideally in startups or early-stage hardware companies.
Deep knowledge of combustion engine systems—rotary or piston—including calibration, design, testing, and control.
Familiarity with generator systems, hybrid powertrains, and energy storage (batteries, alternators, inverters, PLCs).
Experience managing engineering teams through full lifecycle development: concept → prototype → test → product.
Prior exposure to government-funded R&D (DARPA, DOE, DoD) is highly desirable.
Experience in high-mix R&D or low-volume production environments.
Proficient in engineering tools such as SolidWorks, LabView, Mastercam, Matlab, Converge, GT Suite, ANSYS.
Proven ability to balance technical leadership with strategic decision-making and execution under tight timelines.
Strong leadership presence with the ability to inspire, challenge, and support high-performing teams.
Collaborative mindset with a focus on clear communication, delegation, and credit-sharing.
