Description This position has strategic and tactical responsibility for the vision, execution, and management of communications for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Hartford, with a core emphasis on sharing Club impact and increasing donor engagement. The Marketing & Communications Associate provides leadership for the creation, deployment, and evaluation of a comprehensive strategic communications and marketing plan to enhance and grow the organization’s brand and reputation, across multiple audiences, through public relations, media relations, board/donor communications, social media, events, and organizational collateral. This role identifies and responds to opportunities (i.e., current events/news) to build brand awareness and effectively promote the organization, maximizing its return on marketing and communications efforts.
Strategy & Planning - Develop comprehensive annual communications plan and timeline aligned with Development and Program priorities, including media and social media tactics
- Collaborate with program and administration leadership to ensure consistent brand and messaging to current and potential stakeholders
Communications - Play a lead staff role in managing (in partnership with committee chair) the organization’s Communications Committee
- Develop, design, and deploy a monthly e-newsletter for external and internal stakeholders
- Support BGCH Program and Human Resource communications needs, as assigned
- Play a lead role (in coordination with VP of Development) in developing special event communications, including scripting, promotional materials, signage, program books, etc.
Media relations - Create and maintain current media database for print, radio, and broadcast channels
- Write and distribute all press releases to promote special events, club news, grant awards, etc., as appropriate
- Cultivate strong working relationships with regional media (Hartford Courant, Hartford Magazine, Hartford Business Journal, etc.)
- Pitch news stories/photo ops that highlight the positive impact of Clubs
- Coordinate opportunities to position Club & Board leadership as thought leaders on youth development issues through Op-eds, participation in area radio/tv programming. Etc.
Website/Social media - Create and promote Club content/special events/news that increases digital engagement and drives social media activity (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn) to build brand equity
- Support employee recruitment efforts through web and social postings for Club job postings
Collateral Development - Play a lead role in the creation of the organization’s annual report, impact report, program brochures, and other collateral, as assigned
- Maintains and catalogues BGCH photo library (for use on web, collateral, social, etc.)
Professional Development - Represent BGCH at local networking events, as assigned or requested
Requirements - Self-starter with ability to work independently or collaboratively
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Sales/Marketing, Journalism, or related field
- 3-5 years of experience in a communications role(Experience in a nonprofit or advocacy organization preferred)
- Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects
- Strong storytelling abilities & extensive social media experience
- Cultural competency with a proven ability to communicate with diverse audiences
- Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills; attention to detail
- Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills
- Proven track record of achieving communications goals (e.g., national media coverage, successful ROI)
- Strong Microsoft Office skills required
- Design skills are a plus
